Organic
Organic vineyards are managed without the use of systemic fungicides, insecticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. Vineyard sprays are still used, but the products are different. Weeds are controlled through mechanical methods, such as plowing, hoeing, mulching or mowing and fertilization is done via compost mulches, green manures or animal manures.
Organic, Sustainable and Biodynamic Wines
Sustainably
The inherent concept is that the product has been made in such a manner that it will allow the vineyards and environment to continue to produce an undiminished product for all future generations. In producing sustainable wine, a vintner takes into account every single aspect of the winemaking process from soil fertility, water pollution, use of pesticides or not and soil erosion.
Biodynamic
Finally, there is biodynamic viticulture, which was first advocated by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920′s and it gave rise to the organic wine movement. It utilizes a holistic, spiritual, energetic approach to farming and views the vineyard as an interrelated unit by placing emphasis on the balance between the soil, vines and animals in a close self-nourishing system.
Zolo 2010 Torrontes
Zolo Torrontes is medium straw-colored with a fragrant perfume of honey, spring flowers, grapefruit and oranges. Ripe, flavorful, dry, and restrained, this is Torrontes at its best. Organic.
Blackberet 2007 Grenache Syrah
A deep, dark red; Light-medium bodied. Easy berries and heavy spices; oak, deep cherry and blackberry. Vanilla and a little oak; lingers softly. And the winemaker is an overall fantastic gentleman. We enjoyed his company tremendously when he stopped by the store. The name “Black Beret” is in reference to the iconic symbol of France. And the painting on the label is a Monet. This is a perfect sipping wine for your dinner tonight. Organic.
Nelms Road 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon
This newest bottling of Nelms Road Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the vintage very well. The warm and very even 2007 vintage gave beautifully ripe fruit with flavors of dried black fruits, cassis, and cherry leading to a nice generous finish. Aromas of leather, spice, tobacco and vanilla integrate with the fruit, The wine is dark purple in color. Sustainable.
Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley 2008 Fume Blanc Dry Sauvignon Blanc
This Fume Blanc is an outstanding example of Sauvignon, with notes of mineral, melon, white citrus, grapefruit, and honey. The finish is long, and the wine has outstanding purity. Biodynamic
Shafer 2006 Napa Valley Merlot
The red wine program includes 10,000 cases of Merlot, but that production is decreasing in favor of the other reds. The dark ruby/purple-colored 2006 Merlot (84% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc) exhibits fleshy, red and black currant, bay leaf, and underbrush characteristics. Medium-bodied with sweet tannin, it should drink nicely for a decade. Biodynamic.
